It's amazing what people will say when they're behind closed doors. You're opening them is one step further toward bringing light on those with nefarious agendas. We in Virginia have watched this maneuvering going on for a long time.MargretHhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00438437053684478780noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-49893984293941169802007-04-01T00:44:00.000-04:002007-04-01T00:44:00.000-04:00I -- like a number of the other commenters above -...I -- like a number of the other commenters above -- am quite surprised myself at +Jim's "surprise" at both Ms Grieb's conclusion that a major goal of the proposed Covenant is to reverse the unilateral doctrinal innovations of the Episcopal Church, and the warning by +Sauls that the Network could constitute an "alternative ecclesial structure" unless the Episcopal Church reversed its course as requested by the Communion.

Both of these points have been completely obvious to any casual observer at least since the Windsor Report became available in the fall of 2004. The Network was established at the suggestion of the Archbishop of Canterbury to provide a (structured) voice for those within the Episcopal Church who could not accept the innovations of GC03; it was understood from the start that whatever the fate of relations between the Episcopal Church and the Communion, the Network affiliates would remain in full membership in the Communion.

Likewise in the Windsor Report, the Covenant was intended to prevent future unilateral doctrinal innovation of precisely the sort with which the Episcopal Church had given rise to the controversy in the first place; to pretend that a Covenant acceptable to the Communion could be drafted which would allow the Episcopal Church to continue merrily along with its trendy theological novelties amounts to denial on a monumental scale.

Recall the message from +Wright, the Bishop of Durham and a close friend of the Archbishop of Canterbury, published immediately prior to GC06 stating that the Communion was quite serious about Windsor compliance and continued evasion and disingenuous language would not be acceptable -- apparently this message was completely lost on most of our bishops.

The Tanzania Communique simply requested confirmation that the intention of the resolutions at GC06 was in fact to comply with the plain language of Windsor, and to establish a "safe space" where congregations dissenting from the novelties of GC03 could continue to worship as Episcopalians. That the HoB reacted so strongly to this is a measure of the duplicity, stonewalling, and denial that have characterized ECUSA's response to Communion pleas over the last decade. Time has finally run out.Craig Goodrichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08624767388702032189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-39483382893689567932007-03-29T16:54:00.000-04:002007-03-29T16:54:00.000-04:00This was a helpful inside look at your HOB meeting...This was a helpful inside look at your HOB meeting. Thank you. I must admit, however, to being a bit dismayed by your dismissive tone in writing, of Ephraim Radner, that you were "shocked to realize what a significant role he has representing our Church, given his very marginal perspective."

I remember when progressive clergy used "marginal" in the sense of "marginalized people," like gays and lesbians. People were not to be dismissed because they held "marginal" views. Except if you're Ephraim Radner, I suppose. It's that bedeviling logic: those who marginalize people are bad. So we should marginalize them. (Miroslav Volf has a thing or two to say about this in Exclusion & Embrace.) Of course, this raises the question: do you believe Ephraim Radner is in favor of marginalizing people, and if so, what is your duty as a bishop toward him as a brother in Christ?

I wrote a bit about my reaction at http://communioninconflict.blogspot.com/2007/03/ephraim-radner-is-discouraged.html if you're interested.

Be assured of my prayers and best wishes!

Blessings,

MMMarshall Montgomeryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11356270715856811354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-68111118193183443682007-03-29T11:29:00.000-04:002007-03-29T11:29:00.000-04:00This is wonderfully clear and I thank you for your...This is wonderfully clear and I thank you for your report.

I have to say that I was stunned to read: "There is now clear evidence that there has been a strategy by these groups to create an alternative ecclesial structure within the United States, with alternative leadership ..."

Dear bishop, the rest of us have been clear on this for... I don't remember how many years. At least since the Chapman Memo. I hope that at long last the HoB has gotten clear on the threat to our own polity and to the Anglican spirit that guides us. Indeed, it IS serious. It has been quit serious for a long time now. The HoB has been slow on the uptake on this. I hope that from now on you all will hold the line, be firm, give no quarter to those who really are intent on destropying our dear church.

Cautiously hopeful,

Linda McMillan
AustinLindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04662429826507775390noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-31858391942886814172007-03-29T09:47:00.000-04:002007-03-29T09:47:00.000-04:00Thanks for such a wonderful report. It has greatly increased my faith in our bishops to deal with the current insurrection within The Episcopal Church and the tyranny that the revolutionaries are encouraging outside it. My impression, from this report and others, is that our new Presiding Bishop has made all the difference by empowering the bishops to act as they think best.

The only distressing item in the report is the comment that “[t]here is now clear evidence” of a conspiracy to create “an alternative ecclesial structure” led by Bob Duncan. This evidence has been available for at least three years, and groups like Via Media USA have long been trying to get the church to awaken to the danger it faces from the “traditionalist” insurgency. I do hope that the House of Bishops finally understands and is committed to deal with this threat.Lionel Deimelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08363018512775944659noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-86217397485534447042007-03-29T08:01:00.000-04:002007-03-29T08:01:00.000-04:00Indeed, let's not forget the Great Commission, but...Indeed, let's not forget the Great Commission, but sometimes it is best carried out by taking to heart and acting upon Matthew 25:31-46.Jetteyehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02817382736683356716noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-68019005772286812052007-03-28T17:37:00.000-04:002007-03-28T17:37:00.000-04:00+Kelsey,Thanks for this terrific report of the Hou...+Kelsey,

Thanks for this terrific report of the House of Bishops meeting, especially the section that noted the dynamics of the Primates' meeting. I, along with many others, has suspected that the Primates' meeting was largely and controlled by one certain voice, and it was affirming to know that was indeed the case, even if it was disheartening that it occurred.

On a personal note, I'm a postulant in NW Texas (with your old friend +C. Wallis Ohl) preparing to go do my year of Anglican studies. After that I hope to head back to Michigan to serve as a priest (+Ohl has indicated his support for that move). I grew up in Grand Haven and much of my family now lives in Traverse City. My visits to Grace Episcopal there have been consistently good.

My prayers are with you and your ministry. Maybe I'll get the opportunity to join you up there (or in your neck of the woods) some time in the next couple of years.

Grace,
Jared
http://www.jaredcramer.comJared Cramerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01665647940543562091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-36524046111481008672007-03-28T16:58:00.000-04:002007-03-28T16:58:00.000-04:00Nice job, +Jim!Ian did give us a lengthy reiterati...Nice job, +Jim!

Ian did give us a lengthy reiteration of the kerygma as the rationale for MDGs, etc.

+Pierre Whalon
EuropePierrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15443276631484221615noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9090594170845488089.post-27891398830657835692007-03-28T12:28:00.000-04:002007-03-28T12:28:00.000-04:00bishop Kelsey, you wrote:'- we heard a lecture by ...bishop Kelsey, you wrote:
'- we heard a lecture by Ian Douglas of Episcopal Divinity School on the Mission of God, which the Church is called to share in.
